History of Elna Sewing Machines

Before becoming Elna, was known as Ateliers Mécaniques de Précision Tavaro SA popularly known as Tavaro. Established in 1934, it began as a Tavannes Watch Company sub-brand and is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Sandoz corporation. Clock-work artillery fuzes, used to detonate artillery rounds at precise times to fit a designated target, were the company’s bread and butter. Tavaro accounted for eleven percent of Switzerland’s total military exports to Nazi Germany during the height of the export’s popularity.

Switzerland’s strategy throughout the war was to maintain strict neutrality by prohibiting the shipment of any and all military equipment. Tavaro, on the other hand, skirted the rules by shipping components to the UK, a move that was rewarded by that country’s government.

Dr. Ramon Casas Robert, a Spanish engineer, is credited with designing and prototyping the first sewing machine used by the Tavaro family. Apparently, the beginning of the Spanish Civil War resulted in the inventor being compelled to flee to Switzerland. There, the broke inventor sold Tavera the rights to his inventions on sewing machines. It wasn’t until 1940 that the first production models of the “Elna” design were shipped out.

The original Elna, so named because of its striking green hue, revolutionized the sewing machine industry. It pioneered several innovations that are now taken for granted. The most ground-breaking aspect of the machine was the “free arm,” a feature previously seen solely in commercial sewing machines. This enhanced the quality, efficiency, and safety of the stitching process and also added to its already impressive mobility. The Elna was built with portability in mind; it is only 7kg (15.4lbs) and is composed of aluminum rather than the more common cast iron.

It would take several years for Europe’s manufacturing economy to recover from the war’s conclusion. Tavero, now known as Elna International Corp. SA, was well-positioned to become the world’s preeminent exporter of sewing machines after World War II.

At the time of Elna’s launch in the United States, it cost $179, which is equivalent to roughly $1900 in today’s money. The number of units manufactured by Elna is unknown, however, estimates range from 65,000 to 500,000.

In 1952, another popular machine, the Supermatic, supplanted the original Elna. The Lotus model was the second most well-known Elna automobile, after the Grasshopper. The 1968 release was a huge success since it continued the company’s tradition of durability, mobility, and technological advancement. Its name, Lotus, comes from the way its side panels unfold into a ‘lotus’ shape, giving the car a distinctive appearance. The Lotus has become so well-known that it is now part of MoMA’s permanent collection of design objects.

Throughout many years, Tavaro was the only owner of the Elna label. Elna’s computerized machines were first introduced in the 1970s and 1980s. This resulted in increased sales all around the world, but the boom ended in the 1990s.

As globalization ushered in the era of increased worldwide competition, the company’s fortunes began to plummet in the latter decades of the twentieth century. As is the case with many consumer items, inexpensive Asian imports have seriously harmed Europe’s manufacturing sector.

Elna, like many other European businesses of the time, found the modern global market to be unwelcoming. Product availability and mass production became the norm, and consumers adapted. Traditional manufacturing facilities that prioritized quality over quantity were forced to shut down.

Elna was hit hard by rising production costs and falling demand for home sewing machines. Tavaro’s production methods fell behind the curve. There was a bankruptcy filing in 1995.

Janome, a well-known Japanese sewing machine maker, acquired the firm in 1995. Elna continues to exist today in the form of its enduring product lines and the proud assertion that it remains true to its Swiss quality roots.

Where are Elna Sewing Machines made?

After Elna filed for bankruptcy in the 1990s, Janome acquired the Elna name in 2006. The Elna corporation has ceased operations. In any case, Janome has a great selection of Elna sewing machines.

Janome also benefitted from Elna’s purchase. The Japanese firm was able to hire the services of Switzerland’s top-notch European design team. Janome wouldn’t keep producing and selling Elna models if they weren’t making money off of the name.

Elna sewing machines are being designed and manufactured in Switzerland today. Rather than being made in Switzerland, however, the products are manufactured in a number of different East Asian nations. Naturally, new Elna machines do not have solid metal pieces as older models have.

Unfortunately, newer sewing machines compromise trade complexity for sustainability. In general, you shouldn’t expect a brand-new model to serve you for more than ten years. In all likelihood, a machine from the last century will still be running strong in another century!

Does that imply that modern Janome and Elna machines are substitutable? The Elna machines are marketed and sold by Janome, although each machine has its own special touches. When purchased from Janome, an Elna will deliver the same high-quality sewing experience as any other Janome machine.

First and foremost, you need to maintain a regular cleaning routine to make sure that lint or dust does not build up inside your machine. This can cause the internal parts to jam or can clog the needle. To clean your Elna sewing machine, you should open the carry case, turn on the power switch and load a press cloth into the needle area. This prevents lint from being flung around while you are cleaning it.

The next step is to remove the needle and tension the presser foot. This helps prevent any snags or scratches that could break your needle. Once you have done so, you should throw away the press cloth and load some new fabric into the machine. This will prevent any lint from building up and prevent stitches from being sewn incorrectly.
