Husqvarna originated as a firearms business in 1689 and rapidly transitioned into the sewing machine business. The firm became well-known for its ground-breaking inventions, such as the use of sintered steel that does not require oiling and an easy-to-hold bobbin case. Husqvarna is a Swedish company that has been exporting its high-quality sewing machines worldwide since the 1800s.

Nowadays a single company, SVP Worldwide, currently owns and operates major sewing machine brands Singer, Viking, and Pfaff, and Husqvarna (Viking) is also one of those brands. The majority of their equipment is manufactured in China, according to their customer support. SVP Worldwide provided its own response, clarifying that its products are manufactured in Brazil, China, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Thailand. However, Husqvarna (Viking) sewing machines are specially designed in Sweden while manufactured in China under SVP Worldwide.

In this article, you will learn the history of Husqvarna (Viking) sewing machines here, how they started and where Husqvarna sewing machines are made now.

History of Husqvarna (Viking) Brand

Interestingly, Husqvarna started off as the royal firearm factory. Huskvarna was started in 1620, by the King Gustavus II Adolfus of Sweden. King Gustavus II ordered the establishment in Jonkoping of a facility to drill and grind firearm barrels. Since a gunpowder factory already existed in Huskvarna, the factory, which had previously been located in Jonkoping, was relocated there. Once part of the government, the armaments manufacturing was sold to private hands in 1757, and Husqvarna moved to more peaceful products. So they start manufacturing of civilian goods began in the middle of the nineteenth century, while armaments manufacture lasted throughout the century. They start by making rifles for hunting initially and then afterward moved to manufacture sewing machines.

In the middle of the 19th century, new equipment was purchased to increase the output of Remington rifles for the military. They worked wonderfully as sewing machine assembly machines as well. In 1872, Husqvarna shipped its first sewing machine to the United States. From there, the journey to today’s technological marvels may be traced in great depth.

The Board of Directors made the decision to begin producing sewing machines on February 5, 1872. Initially, they called their first prototype “Nordsjernan” (The Northern Star). It didn’t take long for the Freja model, introduced in 1883, to become a hit. Unlike its predecessors, it could sew straight lines of stitches. The machine was powered by gears, and its delicate moving components were shielded from the outside. Freja models, in various iterations, were produced until 1925. The oscillating bobbin sewing machine, marketed as “the sewing machine for families and tradesmen,” was first introduced in 1903. For almost 50 years, this was the only option on the global market.

The Husqvarna Zig-Zag, the first free-arm machine, was released in 1947. The zigzag stitch allowed for a wide variety of new applications, while the free arm made working on tubular sections a breeze.

However, the journey of Husqvarna did not stop there they also start making bicycles, motorcycles, and a slew of additional products including chain saws, lawnmowers, riding mowers, and trimmers; then came stoves and a plethora of cast iron home appliances.

In 2006, the VSM group was brought by Kohlberg & Co., who already owned another famous sewing machine brand Singer. Singer and VSM Group have been merged into a single company named SVP Worldwide, with headquarters in Hamilton, Bermuda. SPV worldwide is currently owning the most famous sewing machine brands like Husqvarna, Singer, and Pfaff.

  1. Husqarvana chinese made sewing machines are not good. The really bring the name of Husqarvana down. I have in the past had an exemplary Husquarva sewing machine until it died. I purchase a new one thinking I was purchasing the same, but, it was chinese and I’m not very happy with the machine. It is not up to the standard of Husqarvana sewing machine.
Filling the bobbin is very poor. I can safely say, I’ll very purchase another sewing machine from chinese Husquarva.
